I am not telling you to invest directly in expensive equipment for a discipline that you may not even be able to continue. But poor quality hardware can get in the way. You would have the impression that you are not in control and that you are struggling to achieve your goals so sometimes it is the material that slows you down!So we start slowly. We buy the basic equipment and even better the recovery and DIY are also used a lot to save money!
So here is the list that I think will be useful for you to start:
Painting. The primary colors, this will allow you to learn how to make your mixtures, it is one of the first things to learn when you start painting. Lots of videos on the internet will allow you to master your chromatic circle. Personally, I advise you to take study paint, (Amsterdam style, top I think) paint with already good quality. Often we are tempted to buy paintings in decoration stores. Unfortunately I used these paints to start painting. They are quite daunting in the sense that the mixtures are difficult to make, the paint does not hold very well, they are waterlogged and not very pigmented. So, as I told you above, you will find it difficult to progress. On the other hand, they can be used well to make backgrounds for large areas! like a colored gesso actually, and you paint on it afterwards, at least that's my opinion!
The easel. Personally, I did not start painting with an easel. I think it's easier to learn to paint flat on a table with a well-protected table of course, because the paint gets messy. If you insist on having an easel, many people sell them on the internet used, it works as well as a new one and it is perfect for painting. Otherwise the top to be able to have a work plan that you can dirty as you wish.
Brushes. It's a bit like painting. I think you have to bet directly on brushes, of good quality with natural bristles. And in addition to have some cheap ones to train because we will be less afraid to wear them out. In any case, they must be well maintained and washed. Mediums. I do not think that for beginners the mediums are very useful. In any case it was not for me it will come later with the technique. Me still today I use a lot of water instead of mediums. Personally it suits me very well. To tell the truth, I even use coffee, so water but colored, which sometimes gives very beautiful relief to my paintings.
Keep your glass jars to make water jars or just put your brushes in for storage.
The paint palette. You can either buy one from the store but the better and again the salvage. Personally, I use old plates, it washes off super easily, the paint does not adhere to it and does not penetrate the material of the plate, the surface is large, I can spread and mix my paints.
Of course, you will need canvas to start with. I don't think you should invest in a high quality canvas, but rather in a premium quality canvas because at the beginning we are often wrong!
